چکیده

Introduction Cryptococcus neoformans has emerged as a clinically important opportunistic pathogen worldwide due to the AIDS pandemic. This pathogenic yeast causes pulmonary and systemic cryptococcosis in immucompromised human and susceptible animals such as cats and dogs (8, 10). C. neoformans is globally distributed and found to associate with soil, pigeon excreta, and decaying wood. Cryptococcal infections are proposed to be caused by inhalation of yeast spores in environment and these infectious propagules are deposited into the pulmonary alveoli of the hosts leading to meningitis or disseminated disease in immunodeficiency hosts (4, 7). Previously, there are several reports on isolation of C. neoformans from pigeon droppings in several provinces of Thailand such as Bangkok, Phayao, Chonburi, and Chiang Mai (5,6,11,12). Therefore it is possible that immunocompromised and immunocompetent patients could be infected with C. neoformans from the environmental sources. However, little is known about the antifungal susceptibility of C. neoformans isolated from environment even though the increased drug resistance has become a clinical concern. In this study, we aimed to determine the drug susceptibility of C. neoformans isolated from pigeon fecal droppings and cats in Bangkok, Thailand to amphotericin B, caspofungin, fluconazole, flucytosine, micafungin, and voriconazole using an automated susceptibility system.

Occurrence and susceptibilities to disinfectants of Cryptococcus neoformans in fecal droppings from pigeons in Bangkok, Thailand.

Cryptococcus neoformans is an opportunistic pathogenic yeast that causes meningoencephalitis and deep skin dermatitis in humans and animals. A hygienic strategy using disinfectants on environmental samples can reduce the risk to the public. The objectives were to survey the distribution of C. neoformans in pigeon fecal droppings collected in 11 districts in Bangkok during 2011-2012 and to evalu...

Characterization of Cryptococcus neoformans isolated from urban environmental sources in Goiânia, Goiás State, Brazil.

Cryptococcus neoformans is an opportunistic fungal pathogen that causes meningoencephalitis as the most frequent clinical presentation in immunocompromised patients, mainly in people infected by HIV. This fungus is an environmental encapsulated yeast, commonly found in soil enriched with avian droppings and plant material. A total of 290 samples of pigeon and the other avian droppings, soil, or...

Prevalence and antifungal susceptibility of Cryptococcus neoformans isolated from pigeon excreta in Chon Buri Province, Eastern Thailand.

The prevalence of cerebral meningitis caused by Cryptococcus neoformans in HIV-infected patients in Eastern Thailand is high. However, little is known about the occurrence of this pathogenic yeast in the environment of this region.  The aim of our study was to characterize the prevalence of C. neoformans, its serotypes and antifungal drug susceptibilities in environmental isolates from Chon Bu...

Molecular identification of non-Cryptococcus yeasts associated with pigeon droppings in Shiraz, Southern Iran

Background: Birds are considered as a reservoir for pathogenic and non-pathogenic fungi. Pigeon droppings have the potential for spreading these fungi to the environment. Cryptococcus species are important fungi associated with pigeon droppings. In this regard, there are many types of yeast associated with guano that is important for human and animal health. Ai...

Isolation and Characterization of Cryptococcus neoformans from Environmental Sources in Busan

Twenty nine samples of pigeon droppings (n = 12) and soil contaminated with avian excreta (n = 19), collected from different sites in Busan, were examined for isolation and characterization of Cryptococcus neoformans. Of these samples, 5 strains of C. neoformans were recovered from pigeon droppings (5/12 : 41.7%). All isolates were belonged to C. neoformans var. grubii (serotype A). The extrace...
